Granton House is situated in an area where there are plenty of walks starting from outside our gate, so there is no need to take your car. For the more energetic, canoeing, climbing, abseiling, tennis and riding are all available within a short distance, as are several good golf courses.
The area is popular for geocaching, an
outdoor activity, mainly on foot, in which the participants use a Global
Positioning System.
Goodrich has an excellent village shop and post office, Jolly's which is just opposite the turning to the castle. There are also two pubs within walking distance and several other pubs just a short drive away serving excellent local food. |

Goodrich Castle, which is one of English Heritage's key attractions with a superb visitor centre opened in 2007 and is only about one mile away. There is a good audio tour to hire and several events throughout the year are held at the castle including plays and re-enactments of jousting etc! Located high above the river Wye, Goodrich Castle was a medieval fortified palace. Built around 1150, the keep is the castle's oldest remaining section. Although unoccupied by the sixteenth century, the castle was still able to withstand a major siege during the English Civil War. The beautiful stained glass window in the chapel was installed to celebrate the Millennium. It is open to visitors throughout the year.

For bird watchers, Yat Rock is a popular place for sighting the Peregrine Falcon during the early summer months. The RSPB allow visitors to view the young chicks using their telescopes. Down by the river at Symonds Yat East you can walk alongside the riverbank or go on a short river cruise. There are many other places nearby from which the view of the Wye is particularly beautiful, especially if exploring on foot. The bluebell season is not to be missed. |

The photograph, left was taken at river bank level and shows the town of Ross-on-Wye from a short distance along the Rope Walk, a riverside park area, so named due to the rope making industry, which took place by the river during the 18th century. The photograph also shows St Mary's church and the nineteenth century Gazebo Tower. |
