Granton House is situated in an area where there are plenty of walks beginning right outside the door, so there is no need to take your car. For the more energetic, canoeing, climbing, abseiling, tennis and riding are all available within a short distance, as are several good golf courses. There is both an excellent shop with a Post Office in the village of Goodrich, as well as two  pubs, serving food and good cider and beer!

Goodrich Castle, which is one of English Heritage's key attractions with a superb visitor centre that opened in 2007 is only about one mile away. There is a good audio tour to hire and there are several events throughout the year held at the castle including plays and reinactments of jousting etc!

Located high above the river Wye, Goodrich Castle was a medieval fortified palace. It is managed by English Hertitage and is open to visitors throughout the year. It has a beautiful stained glass window in the chapel that was installed to celebrate the Millenium.

Although unoccupied by the sixteenth century, Goodrich Castle was still able to withstand a major siege during the English Civil War.

Built around 1150, the keep is the castle's oldest remaining section.

At five hundred feet above sea level, Yat Rock, above the villages of Symonds Yat East and West affords spectacular views of the river and its surrounding countryside. In the view from Yat Rock, pictured to the right, the village of Goodrich as well as Coppet Hill can be seen.

For bird watchers, Yat Rock is a popular place for sighting the Peregrine Falcon during the early summer months. The RSPB allow visitors to view the young chicks using their telescopes.

There are also many other places nearby from which the view of the Wye is particularly beautiful, especially if exploring on foot. The bluebell season is not to be missed.

At a distance of approximately four miles from Granton House, the picturesque market town of Ross-on-Wye overlooks the River Wye and is located between the ancient cities of both Hereford and Gloucester.

The photograph, left was taken at river bank level and shows the town of Ross-on-Wye from a short distance along the Rope Walk, a riverside park area, so named due to the rope making industry, which took place by the river during the 18th century.

The photograph also shows St Mary's church and the nineteenth century Gazebo Tower.
